For some Mac users who have never had to use Windows in their daily lives, Trillian may not ring as a very familiar word. However, for the rest of us, Trillian is something that holds a dear, special place in our hearts as one of the only tolerable IM clients under Windows. Even that is up for debate at times, but overall, it's a popular client for a reason, and that reason is that it doesn't tend to suck as much as the others.

These days, I no longer have to work under Windows for 10 hours a day, and therefore I no longer have to use Trillian for all of my instant messaging needs during work hours. Now that I've gone back to Adium, I can't say that I've missed Trillian, and I imagine the sentiment is similar for most others like me. That's why, when I first heard that Trillian was coming to the Mac, I questioned whether it was a practical joke.

But no, it's actually true. Cerulean Studios, makers of Trillian, has written on its company blog that it is working on a Mac client as we speak. The team makes it clear right off the bat that this isn't a port—'we always said that we would never ‘port’ Trillian to OS X'—this is a newly-written UI.

Why did Cerulean Studios decide to do a Mac version? The answer to that isn't quite as clear. However, the team does discuss why doing so isn't as difficult as it would seem, because the core functionality of the software is separated from the UI. 'This is how the Flash-based web version and the Ajax-driven iPhone version can use the same code as the native Windows client. The UI layers are all entirely different, but the underlying code is the same,' the team writes.

In fact, an alpha is already in the wild for private beta (or alpha?) testers (of which I am not, but would like to be!), which Cerulean says is still very minimal. The Mac version will be lagging behind the Windows version of Trillian for some time, too, as it will be gaining features and functionality slowly over time.

To be totally honest, I'm slightly horrified at what I see so far in the screenshot, although I'm trying to maintain an optimistic hope. Again, I question the purpose of this non-port port—is Cerulean attempting to gain some level of market share among Mac users, and does it expect Mac users to actually pay for Trillian Pro service one day? The more competition on the Mac the better, though, and so I welcome Trillian onto the Mac to compete with the likes of Adium. Good luck Cerulean, you'll certainly need it.
